Humber River Hospital, Toronto, Canada

When designing their new, state-of-the-art hospital, Humber River Hospital (HRH) in Toronto, Canada engaged with GE Healthcare for help in two specific areas:

  1. Developing a physical layout for the Medicine and Telemetry units that would optimize efficiency, and
  2. Designing a larger ED to accommodate 30% projected growth.

Combining simulation modeling and expertise in lean process improvement, GE Healthcare helped HRH design new processes and optimal physical layouts by providing visibility to the impact of various options.  As a result of using these tools and techniques, HRH was able to reduce travel time on the wards by 20%, reduce care activity delays by 30%, reduce LOS in the new ED by at least 35%, and free up more than 7,000 square feet of ED space.

Since building their new facility, Humber River Hospital has continued to collaborate with GE Healthcare as they pursued the Command Centre transformation journey. In November of 2017 GE Healthcare and HRH launched the world’s second hospital Command Centre, which brings together people and advanced, real-time analytics to improve patient flow and access.
