A non-profit health system sought to develop a regionally–focused clinically integrated network to better align with its medical staff and other regional providers in order to continue to meet the needs of the region, respond to industry changes due to healthcare reform and new delivery models, and attain high standards for the clinical care it provides.


The System is a not-for-profit, academic healthcare delivery system operating seven medical campuses and a University Medical Group (“UMG”). The System is committed to medical excellence through clinical care, education, and research. The management of the System has recognized the importance of closer collaboration with its medical staff in order to continue to meet the needs of the communities it serves, respond to healthcare industry changes due to healthcare reform and new delivery and payment models, and attain the high standards it has set for the clinical care it provides. In its effort to best serve its region, the System also recognized the need to expand its regional partnerships with other healthcare delivery systems to offer affordable high-quality services close to home. 

Our Approach

GE Healthcare Partners (“GEHC Camden Group”) assisted with the development of a regionally-focused clinically integrated network as a means to further align with their hospitals and ensure physician collaboration in response to a challenging marketplace. GEHC Camden Group facilitated a clinically integrated network (“CIN”) capabilities assessment for the System and potential aligned organizations that could join the regional CIN.

The goals of this process were to develop a CIN vision and organization model, facilitate collaboration between the hospitals and affiliated providers, design the regional CIN operating principles, create the infrastructure and associated governance models, and develop a high-level implementation plan in preparation for operationalizing the regional CIN.

GEHC Camden Group also facilitated the design of a high performing care model that spanned the continuum  and was designed to improve quality, reduce costs, and promote patient and provider satisfaction. We partnered with the System to identify the organizational structure to support the care model that defined roles and responsibilities, promoted continuity and communication, and eliminated duplication. GEHC Camden Group provided additional recommendations for technology, analytics, and reporting to support the care model and performance monitoring.

A financial opportunity and profitability analysis was also conducted to assess the impact of care management redesign efforts and the resulting anticipated savings. This effort also included funds flow and incentive design work. The System, with assistance from GEHC Camden Group, also evaluated potential additions to their network through the assessment of regional stakeholder groups.

Additionally, GEHC Camden Group assisted the System with the design of formal partnership models that they could utilize to explore the System’s growth opportunities.  Collaboratively, industry best practice governance and management systems were evaluated, and operating models were assessed to identify the framework to best serve the needs of the System and its patients.
